A. The accounting procedures are same both in Government and firms. But the pressure of work will be far less in government as the work is set to a pattern, whereas the accounting in firms is commercially oriented !

What is the difference between an accounting clerk, accounting technician and staff accountant?
Q. I was so happy that I found a job in public accounting, however, they gave me an "Accounting Technician" title and I am pursuing a professional accounting designation. Will I ever get a chance to become a "Staff Accountant" instead? Is "Accounting Technician" a position below what a Business degree in Accounting graduate should be getting? Like I am in a three months probation, do you think after three months if i can pass the probation, then I can become a "Staff Accountant"? Thank you.

A. From a UK perspective we have three or four categories: Unqualified Qualified by experience Accounting Technician CCAB Qualified Accountant Accounting Technician is a distinct qualification offered by The Association of Accounting Technicians. Qualified Accountants are usually Chartered Accountants, Chartered Management Accountants, Chartered Certified Accountants or Chartered Public Finance Accountants Qualified Accountants qualification is more advanced than a degree. Hope this helps

What accounting trick was used to create the illusion of a budget surplus during the Clinton administration?
Q. When the Clinton administration announced they had passed a budget that created the first budget surplus in decades, some group dissected the budget and found that it was an accounting trick; some budget items were moved off-budget, to the exact amount of the fictitious surplus. I remember that announcement coming out, but I don't remember who exposed this fraud or the details of the budget trickery. Anybody have that information?

A. Time and time again, anyone reading the mainstream news or reading articles on the Internet will read the claim that President Clinton not only balanced the budget, but had a surplus. This is then used as an argument to further highlight the fiscal irresponsibility of the federal government under the Bush administration. The claim is generally made that Clinton had a surplus of $69 billion in FY1998, $123 billion in FY1999 and $230 billion in FY2000 . In that same link, Clinton claimed that the national debt had been reduced by $360 billion in the last three years, presumably FY1998, FY1999, and FY2000--though, interestingly, $360 billion is not the sum of the alleged surpluses of the three years in question ($69B + $123B + $230B = $422B,… [cont.]

How to pursue accounting when I already have a BA in Sociology?
Q. Hi, I am interested in a career in accounting. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. I am thinking of going back to school to get another Bachelor s for Accounting because it will be easier than getting a Master s in Accounting and not having any experience at all. Also, I was looking at the Master s program for non-accounting majors and you have to take a lot of credits and the classes if you are enrolled as a Graduate student are more expensive. I would like to know how hard it will be for me to major in Accounting? I m not used to studying hard. I m used to being the lazy student and barely passing. I love Math but while I was going for my Bachelor s in Sociology I took Calculus 1 and I didn t pass it because I couldn t keep up… [cont.]

A. You should be able to transfer most of your credits to a new program to count toward your Accounting degree. I mean that the classes you have already taken should count toward requirements of an Accounting program (like having a double major). I would simply speak to an enrollment representative at the school you are looking at to get the requirements and info on transferring the credits. You will have to do a lot more work for Accounting than you did for Sociology. It's what I would call a "real" degree program, whereas the arts are generally a cake walk.

What schools offer a forensic accounting masters?

A. I hope this is in someway helpful. I've been unable to find any Forensic Accounting Master's, aside from the one you've mentioned. However, you don't require a Master's in Forensic Accounting if you're interesting in that field. Most forensic accountants that I've spoken with are C.P.A's within large firms. I'm Canadian, so I'm unsure which universities offer that specific program. Some other Master's concentrations you could look into are MBA's in Fraud Examination (I think Argosy offers it); or look into Strayer's different MBA concentrations (if I recall they had quite a few, perhaps even forensic accounting)/ But, I'm guessing you're aware of the universities which offer MBA's in Accounting, and are only looking for Forensic… [cont.]

What is the best future accounting field to work in?
Q. I am already having a BS in business administration- genaral concentration. This fall, I am starting my accounting certificate program and I would like to ask which classes are best to take? I would prefer to work for non-profit and private organizations in the accounting field. I do not plan to take a CPA exam in the future. Thank you for your advices!

A. I don't see a point of taking accounting classes, but not taking the CPA exam. In most companies, you need to have a CPA before you can progress in the accounting field beyond a certain level (i.e. controller, CFO, etc.). Financial accounting, fund accounting, financial analysis, managerial accounting are all beneficial in this field / career.

What is the accounting treatment if the expenses to be replenish is higher than the petty cash fund stablish?
Q. My question is about accounting with a particular topic in the petty cash fund. The treatment should be applicable here in the Philippines.
Asked by Danna - Sun Nov 25 21:51:37 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. can't be possible. If you start with $100 in petty cash fund, but you have $90 in receipts, but all the cah is gone..then you are missin a receipt and someone either stole the money or forgot to get a receipt so you can just likely call it a $10 miscellaneous expense to even it out to the $100 petty cash fund. If you started with a fund of $100 and have $110 in receipts then then the petty cash fund needs to be increased to $110 first..and then the $110 in expenses are written off.

Q. I need an accounting software that is simple to use and user-friendly for my home and business expenses. I only need it to track my expenses. A. I definately think having a degree in anything will help you get a job, even if it doesn't apply to the job you are going after. Think of it this way... would you rather hire someone with a degree and certification, or just someone who is certified? Having a degree shows that you are very well educated, and I think that means a lot to an employer. Good luck with your accounting studies and your job hunt!!

A. Haha, lazy.. My brother works in a resarunt. The enviroment is fast, always busy, high expectations in quality. The organization is a sole proprietorship, and the owner is also the manager. The owner organises balance sheets monthly and seeks accounting assistance yearly. Through his reports he can make the appropiate decisions. This decisions change may change the stock or cut down in expenses, so my brother must reduce the ammount of ingredients used in his cooking etc. hopes this helps :)

Q. Interview a friend or family member about his/her work environment. Is his/her organization a sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation? Who is involved with the accounting decisions and information? In what ways is your friend or family member affected by the accounting information? I'm at work and I don't have time to interview my friends. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
