A. If you want to find a legitimate agent to represent you for commercials, TV & film go to Sag.org. Use the dropdown menu on the right labeled 'resources' and choose 'agent information'. On the next screen, on the left choose 'Find a SAG franchised agent' and follow the directions. You can look up agents all over the US, but there are higher concentrations where the work is (Los Angeles, NY, IL, FL, GA etc.) Then you can send them your headshot, resume, and a cover letter stating that you are seeking representation and wait to see if they call you in for an interview. Once you have an agent, they will get you the auditions, but until then you can check out actorsaccess.com. You can also see if your state has a film alliance. Sometimes… [cont.]

Can any agent find out how much commission the buying and selling agents were paid in a recent sale?
Q. Do all agents have the capability to find out how much commission was paid to the selling and buying agents of a specific transaction or is it confidential to the agents specific to the transaction? If the information is available, is this information publicly available or is it only available to listed agents via their real estate agencies? Thx in advance.
Asked by Tanai - Mon May 19 09:36:53 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It isn't public information. It is on the closing statement, or HUD-1 form from the lender, but that is only given to the involved parties to the transaction.

Is the submission process different between US and UK/Canadian literary agents?
Q. I'm expanding my lit agent search to UK and Canadian agents. I have my standard query letter model that I've used for US agents, but I wasn't sure if there's a different culture regarding submissions for UK or Canadian agents. I've read that UK agents generally don't place as much importance on the letter as US agents do, and if that's the case, I'm assuming you can keep it bare bones. Advice?
Asked by bigmikechen - Sat Apr 26 23:15:10 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can start by purchasing Writers' and Artists' Yearbook and/or The Writer's Handbook for UK agents, or The Canadian Writer's Market and/or The Canadian Writer's Guide for Canadian agents. I've never read these books, but if they are anything like Writer's Market then they will contain the information that you need. I would advise you to take a close look at what market would be best for your book. The US market is the largest in the world. If your book is more likely to do well in the US it would make more sense to find an agent in the US because agents make a larger percentage when a book is sold in a foreign market. If you get an agent in the UK or Canada and then the book ends up selling better in the US you just gave up an… [cont.]

What are some good acting agents in California and what work have they found that makes them good?
Q. I'm planning on moving to California and trying to become a professional actor. I'm 23 and my ultimate goal is to become a TV actor. Every bit of advice I've gotten is pretty much the same, "You will need an agent." So what are some good agents in California that I could seek out and what work have they found, that makes them good? I need names and why I should reach them out, and if possible, what to expect? Any advice would be VERY helpful.

A. Go get a copy of the Ross Reports, it has a listing of agencies. It's impossible to list individual agents because, as an unknown, you aren't really going to get a say in the matter. You're right you do need an agent, however unless you're SAG, you may find you have a hard time getting an agent to even give you the time of day. Remember this a business and these people see hundreds of headshots and resumes with professional experience come across their desk every day. What is going to make you stand out? As far as what you should do, the very first thing would be to sign up for some classes. Second City, The Groundlings, Beverly Hills Playhouse, Howard Fine, Stella Adler, there are tons to choose from. Your second goal would be to become… [cont.]

Why do many agents not diversify their stock portfolios in practice?
Q. At the time of the credit crisis it emerged that many people held undiversified portfolios. Why is it that many agents, who obviously must understand the principles of diversification, did not diversify their stock portfolios in practice?

A. because the general statement of "dont put all your eggs in oner basket" is(to me) wrong. you dont need to be diversified to be rich. look at donald trump. he invests primarily in real estate. it can be risky do diversify and not diversify, but if you are well experienced in your type of investment, then iits probobly where you want to be.

How many agents should I submit my query to?
Q. I just finished writing my first novel and am anxious to submit my query and (hopefully) find an agent. My question is: Should I submit my query to one agent at a time (assuming I will get lots of rejections since I am an 'unknown') or submit my query to several agents simultaneously?

A. The more the better (thus automatically increase ur chances of getting a yes). Write an excellent query letter. There are several samples available (google it) An DO mention in your letter that you are sending it to more then one agent and once you get one, let the others know... A. agents get 10% they only get paid when their clients work. they don't get anything up front. if you are a minor you will need support from your parents. getting into acting can be a little costly. the start up costs are your pictures, clothes, transpor tation costs to get to all the interviews, acting classes. pictures are around 3 to 500 dollars and you need a lot of copies as you take a picture with you on each interview. when you work a parent or guardian will have to be on the set with you until your 18 or get emancipated. if you don't pick up a job fairly soon the costs to get to all the interviews can add up. if your in so. calif. you can get a magazine called VARIETY. it is like the bible of everything going on in show biz. agents,… [cont.]

When submitting sample chapters to agents for consideration, is it necessary to submit to one agent at a time?
Q. Considering that agents seem to take three months or so to come to a conclusion, is it sensible to make multiple submissions to several agents at the same time and if so, should you inform agents that they are not the only ones considering the work?
Asked by dottie - Sat Jul 19 15:27:34 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What you have read about any agent you send work to should tell you if he/she takes simultaneous submissions. Hopefully you are also only sending work to those who ask for it, after a query, and the queries are sent only to those agents who accept unsolicited queries. Add: and who work with the type of book you are trying to publish. Pick up a copy of the current The Writer's Market and study that first section on how to publish properly. It will answer, with great authority, plus samples, tips from many experts, (and from long experience) all the questions you may have about the process of publishing. A. In FL, it's "will you write me" and "who are you going to quote me with". You want an a rated carrier, with someone like AM Best. There are a buncha new, unrated carriers cropping up, like Cypress, but since they aren't rated at all, you don't even know if they'll be in business the day after a major hurricane. For the most part, a good agent will ask YOU lots of questions, to be sure that you're insured propertly. I know a GREAT insurance agent in FL - www.huttinsurance.com I'm not affiliated, but I've brokered stuff through them, and they do a bang up job.

I am not sure what courses are like through franchises, however, here, the courses with regular real estate schools are very good. When you are looking to find an agency to work for, consider the following: - do they regularly pay for training for their employees? what kind of training and how frequently? - does management get regular training and upgrade their knowledge on changes in legislation etc (here we have special annual education to attend to stay in the know) - what internal systems and procedures do they have that will assist people who are just starting out? for example, a good computer software and training resources in the office for when you get… [cont.]

Why do agents charge a percentage on jobs that the actor booked themselves ?
Q. Hi, I have an agent, and around here, agents not only charge you 20% on jobs that they book for you, but if you book jobs on your own, the actor is supposed to give them 20% of that also. It is standard practice around here. What is the 20% for ? They didn't get you the job, so why does the actor have to pay them a fee ?
Asked by queenthesbian - Wed Mar 18 02:41:43 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Usually agents don't demand the payment if you booked the jobs yourself but they do hope for it. As an actor it is treating your agent with respect and more importantly it is an opportunity to show them you are bookable. If you booked a job whether with them or on your own your agent sees that you can and do book jobs and they will submit you for more. But I get the frustration actors feel about paying when they did the work. When I was working in casting when an actor submitted themselves but we saw they had an agent we would ask them if they wanted us to negotiate with them or their agent. In some ways it benefits you to have your agent handle the paperwork etc and all you have to do is show up. An agents job in not finished after… [cont.]

A. I would choose the three that have the most SOLD boards in the area. An Etsate Agent with 20 houses on their books and 15 sold is better that an Agent with 100 houses and only 2 of them sold. Don't just go for the cheapest. The difference between .5% in agency fees could be the difference between 10,000 when you sell your house.

What is the most important thing agents look out for when a person acts in a play?
Q. When people act, what is the most important thing to do to become a good actor? Do agents come to watch plays like at a drama club or workshop, even if its just a local club or does it have to be a big, important, well known club?
Asked by unknown - Mon Jul 5 08:01:15 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Agents don't look at plays at the amateur level. There are a million such and there are so many people who want their services that they wouldn't have the time. You have to be in summer stock or somewhere professional or almost professional. As for what they look for, it's mostly looks. If you have devoted every second of your existence to securing a part so that you get a job acting in a major venue, and if you're tall, extremely beautiful and sexually appealing and appear to have some intelligence (a secondary requirement), you might get noticed--if you're lucky.

Q. How do you get an acting agents attention in a cover letter and resume?
Asked by Girlie - Wed Apr 23 22:33:27 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In a cover letter you want to sound as personable as possible... Though it's not the thing you should be worrying about. What you need to make sure is amazing is your Resume... A resume is the most essential item for an actor. It tells the Casting director all they need to know... What they're capable of and if they are experienced or not. It can even tell them your certain Type Cast you are... That means its the role you tend to play, like Shy and sweet, or loud and obnoxious. Your resume can tell them whether your versatile or not... So its extremely important! never do this: What !ris said is totally WRONG about one thing! you NEVER should attach your photo to your resume and/or your contact information because if the casting… [cont.]

A. What we fans do not understand is the NBA is a business. They have a union just like teachers. Derek Fisher is head of it. Anyways, they need to look out for their families and $ like in the real world is essential. Also, what if they have kids and the team that they are looking into have better schooling than the state their team is now? If I was an NBA player I would take every chance of this opportunity. Fans need to understand this. I mean there are other reasons why players move because their team sucks and like us they always go for the best opportunity. What I do not agree with are players, like Sprewell whose game I idolize saying that he needs more $ because he needs to feed his family the guy was making 11 million and the T-Wolv [cont.]

Asked by frogysue - Thu Aug 6 19:30:23 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Libraries and Book Stores! Your best bet is going to your local library or book store with a notebook and a pen. Open up the books, and look for acknowledgments the author has made that can include their agent or publisher. How to find the right agent? just go to that genre and there ya go! The main reason you can't use the internet, because good agents who are legit will not advertise on the internet, especially those google ads. So be warey, your best bet is what i mentioned. And of course, be prepared to get rejected, but keep trying.
